Congress still okay with indefinite detention and torture of Americans
Even after a federal court deemed the NDAA unconstitutional, the US House of Representatives refused to exclude indefinite detention provisions from the infamous defense spending bill during a vote on Friday.
An attempt to strike down any provisions allowing for the US military to indefinitely detain American citizens without charge from next year’s National Defense Authorization Act was shot down Friday morning in the House of Representatives.
…Guantanamo for everyone.

9/11: THE FALLING MANSeptember 11 2001 was a day of many incredible and shocking stories: stories of survivors, stories of heroes. But there was one story that people didn’t want to face. The story of the people who began to jump from the World Trade Center just minutes after the first plane hit. Their images were caught on videotape and in photographs, but soon they were never seen again, as if they had never existed.
Among those pictures is one of the most unforgettable images from 9/11 - a photograph of a falling man, frozen in mid air, his body perfectly parallel with the twin towers of the World Trade Centre. (see above)
The photo ran in newspapers across the world the following day, and should have remained one of the defining images of that terrible event. Instead, it was erased from history.
CBC Newsworld’s The Passionate Eye presents the North American premiere of The Falling Man, the story of the ‘jumpers’ of 9/11. It follows the trail of the photographer who nearly lost his life shooting the image; of the citizens who decried it, arguing that it was sensational and exploitative; of the editors who published it and then reluctantly banned it; and the journalist who finally uncovered the falling man’s identity.
The Falling Man confronts this single, harrowing image and helps history to give a proper due to the jumpers of 9/11.

Workshop Theme
The 9/11 attacks shocked the world. The staging and impact of the
attacks categorically transcend the local. The attacks, televised
worldwide in real time, stunned and choked all of us viewers, leaving us
wondering who ‘they’ were, and who, where and how ‘we’ were in this
highly mediatised ‘danse macabre’ of violence. The attacks have
increasingly become an ever more global event and meme, permeating and
altering politics, diplomacy, trust, secrecy, international relations
and warfare; but also identity. They were larger than life and left a
permanent imprint on our collective ways of experiencing, thinking and
dealing with terrorism, international politics and religion, and
ultimately, with ourselves and others. Taking 9/11 as a cue, but also
moving beyond, this one-day event seeks to question and explore the ways
in which the politics of terror have touched, transformed and tainted
our lives as extras on the stage of international politics. We also
seek, however, to raise question about the terrors of the politics that
have set the stage for, and have been imposed as a result of, the
attacks, at once asserting and disrupting the comfort zone of ‘politics
as usual’ as the rightful ‘us’ versus the evil ‘them.’
Format
It is not our intention to stage a full-fledged conference, but rather
to provide an informal and open space for discussion and thought.
Presenters will give brief (20 minutes, or less) talks to kick off
discussions.
